- Awards | ECO Simplified Limit
ECO Simplified Shortlisted for StartUp Awards National Series Sunderland-based Eco Simplified has been named one of the most exciting new businesses in the region after being shortlisted as part of a brand-new awards programme. The StartUp Awards National Series has been launched to recognise the booming startup scene across the UK which has accelerated since the pandemic began. In 2020, when most of the world was shutting down, more than 400,000 start-ups were set up in Britain, with similar increases seen in other European countries. There was stiff competition with over 2,500 applications received in response to the Startup Awards National Series’ first-ever call for entries. James Aspey, Director of Eco Simplified said: It is a privilege to work in an industry where every day we can make a difference to people living in fuel poverty, whilst making a positive difference to the environment. Big thank you to the team at Eco Simplified, I am so proud of you all. Supported nationally by BT, EY, Dell & Intel, the programme will celebrate the achievements of the amazing individuals across the UK who have turned an idea into an opportunity and taken the risk to launch a new product or service. Co-founded by the team behind the Great British Entrepreneur Awards, the new series follows the success of the Wales StartUp Awards, after organisers recognised the exceptional potential in the startup scene across the other British regions. Professor Dylan Jones-Evans OBE, the creator of the StartUp Awards National Series, said: “New firms are important for generating economic prosperity, employment opportunities and innovation. Since 2016, the Wales StartUp Awards have celebrated this amazing annual contribution to our economy by entrepreneurs and the impact they have on communities across the nation. “Given the sheer volume of phenomenal start-ups we’ve heard from since then, as well as the huge post-pandemic shift in people’s desires to take their career in a new direction and set up a business against the odds, we felt it was the right time to take the programme nationwide. We have been blown away by the standard of entries in this first year and truly look forward to crowning the winners in June.”
- Air Source Heat Pump | ECO Simplified Limit
Air Source Heat Pump Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) absorb heat from the outside air to heat your home and hot water. They can still extract heat when air temperatures are as low as -15°C. Air source heat pumps need electricity to run, but because they are extracting renewable heat from the environment, the heat output is greater than the electricity input. This makes them an energy efficient method of heating your home. Think of an air source heat pump as a 'reverse fridge'. Heat is absorbed from the outdoor air and is compressed to raise the temperature. This then works to heat your home and hot water. Before thinking about an ASHP you must consider the following : Do you have somewhere to put it? You’ll need a place outside your home where a unit can be fitted to a wall or placed on the ground. It will need plenty of space around it to get a good flow of air. A sunny wall is ideal. The external unit is connected to an internal unit containing circulation pumps and hot water, which is usually smaller than the average boiler. What type of heating system do you have now? Homes without an existing central heating system will require one to be installed for an air source heat pump to work. What fuel will you be replacing? The system is more likely to pay for itself if it’s replacing an expensive system like electric heating. You’re unlikely to save much on your heating bill if you’re switching from mains gas. Air source heat pumps can be installed as one of two varieties: Air-to-Water Heat Pumps: These are the most common in the UK, transferring the heat into water which can then be used for traditional home heating elements. Air-to-Air Heat Pump s: These work with a circulation system to heat the air itself. The main benefit of an air source heat pump is a more energy efficient method of heating your home, due to it producing around 3.5 kW of heat for every 1kW of energy used. This efficiency also brings a great saving on your carbon footprint of between 2,150 to 2,250 kg of carbon a year, compared to an A-rated boiler according to the Energy Saving Trust. Only air to water heat pumps are included in funding schemes. Currently the ECO4 Scheme offer fully funded options, subject to qualifying criteria. To find out what these are follow the link below; ECO4 Air source heat pumps offer a great alternative to LPG gas & oil boilers, electric room heaters and electric storage heaters but to work at their best your home needs to be a well insulated home. If you are looking to spend money on a new heating system but insulation in your home is not up to standard, an air source heat pump would not be a sound investment for the future. Air source heat pumps work best at producing heat at a lower temperature than boilers so if you have an draught proof home this will increase the efficiency. It is also worth keeping in mind that while it is possible that if you are changing from a boiler to an Air source heat pump that you could use the existing pipework and radiators, this is not guaranteed and it is very likely that all will need to be replaced. - Smart Heating Controls | ECO Simplified Limit
Smart Heating Controls Smart heating controls allow you to control your heating from your mobile phone or tablet via an app. Obviously for these to work, you do need an active internet connection. They allow you to have greater control over your home heating by giving you access while you are on the move, so that if you are out, you can always return to a nice warm home. There are several different products available, with varying levels of features available. Within the ECO4 scheme there are several products that can be installed; from smart controls to Time and Temperature zone controls that allow for a minimum of 2 heating zones in your property so that instead of heating your whole house, you could turn the heating off in a zone your are not currently in. This is usually set to upstairs and downstairs but it is also possible to have multiple zones, through additional smart TRV's being added. - Great British Insulation Scheme | ECO Simplified Limit
Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) is a government energy efficiency scheme designed to support households in England, Scotland & Wales to increase the insulation in their homes, with an EPC rating of between D-G. The scheme began in April 2023 and will cover a three-year period until 31 March 2026. GBIS offers the opportunity to have a single insulation installed or if you own your own property also have heating controls installed alongside the insulation measure if your household qualifies as low income. There are 2 routes to eligibility: low income and general. To be eligible under the low-income eligibility, someone living in the property needs to receive a means-tested benefit or the household income is less than £31,000. DWP administered benefits Pension Credit Universal Credit Income Based Jobseekers Allowance Income Related Employment & Support Allowance Income Support Housing Benefit Tax Credits (Child & Working Tax Credit) If you do not claim a benefit above but your household income is less than £31,000 then as long as your local authority is running a Flex scheme, you can qualify through completing an LA Flex application. To be eligible under the General eligibility your council tax band needs to be either A-D in England or A-E in Scotland & Wales . What can be installed: Owner Occupied Homes: Cavity Insulation Internal Wall Insulation (May require a contribution) Loft Insulation Flat Roof Insulation Room in Roof Insulation (May require a contribution) Heating controls with an insulation measure (Low Income Eligibility Only) Private Rented Homes: Cavity Insulation (Low Income Eligibility Only) Internal Wall Insulation (May require a contribution) Loft Insulation (Low Income Eligibility Only) Flat Roof Insulation Room in Roof Insulation (May require a contribution) Things to be aware of: Private rented properties in England & Wales that have an EPC rating of F or G must have a MEES exemption to qualify for GBIS. Private rented properties in Scotland with an EPC rating of F or G do not qualify for GBIS has there is no MEES equivalent in Scotland. GBIS funding is primarily designed for Loft and Cavity Insulation installs in low-income households which is why these measures are not allowed in private rented properties under the general eligibility. Internal Wall & Room in Roof insulation is possible under GBIS but due to these being considered high-cost insulation, there may be a contribution required Apply Now
- Internal Wall Insulation | ECO Simplified Limit
Internal Wall Insulation About 35% of all heat loss from UK homes is due to un-insulated external walls. Internal wall insulation is perfect for solid wall homes where you can't alter the outside of the property. If your home was built before 1920 there is a strong likelihood that your property has solid walls. You can check your wall type by looking at your brick pattern. If some of the bricks are laid with the square end facing, the wall is likely to be solid. If the wall is stone, it is likely to be solid. Internal wall insulation is installed on a room by room basis and is applied to all exterior walls. Polyisocyanurate Insulated (PIR) plaster boards are usually used creating a dry-lined, insulated internal wall. The internal walls are then plastered to leave a smooth and clean surface for redecoration. Bill savings and things to be aware of: Can save between £195-£650 a year on your fuel bills depending on property size (Figures from the Energy Saving Trust and assume property is a gas heated home and sized between a sma ll flat to a large detached home). Not only will this make your house warmer in winter but it will also save you money by slowing the loss of heat through un-insulated walls. It will slightly reduce the floor area of any rooms which it is applied (roughly about 100mm per wall) Can be quite disruptive to install and does require the removal and re-fixing of items such as switches and radiators. Any issues with penetrating or rising damp must be rectified before install can commence. Grant funding is available that can cover the full cost of installation (qualifying criteria apply). - First Time Central Heating | ECO Simplified Limit
First Time Central Heating If you currently live in a property that does not have a central heating system, you will be paying more to heat your home than a property with a central heating system. Below are some examples of properties that would be considered to have no central heating system present. Electric room heaters, including direct acting room heaters, fan heaters and inefficient electric storage heaters Gas room heaters Gas fire with back boiler Solid fossil fuel fire with back boiler Direct electric underfloor or ceiling heating (not connected to an electric boiler) Bottled LPG room heating Solid fossil fuel room heaters Wood/biomass room heating Oil room heater No heating at all With the push towards renewable heating, it may become more difficult in the future to have a gas supply fitted at your property. It is certainly the case with heating grants as if you want gas central heating, you must live in a property that has an existing gas supply and meter that has never had central heating installed. The following may be installed as FTCH: Gas Boiler Biomass Boiler Air Source Heat Pump Ground Source Heat Pump Bill savings and things to be aware of: The exact savings depend on what the pre-main heating system was and what has now been installed. This makes it difficult to give a fair bill saving. All properties must have loft or room in roof insulation and cavity or solid wall insulation (if able to be installed) either already present or installed before Gas First Time Central Heating is completed to access ECO4 funding for First Time Central Heating. Grant funding is available that can cover the full cost of installation (qualifying criteria apply). - Cavity Wall Insulation | ECO Simplified Limit
Cavity Wall Insulation About 35% of all heat loss from UK homes is due to un-insulated external walls. If your home was built after the 1930s, the chances are that its external walls are made of two ‘skins’ with a small gap between them. This means they are ‘cavity walls’ and the gap between them can be filled with insulating material to stop the warmth escaping to the outside. A cavity wall can be filled with an insulating material by injecting beads into the wall. This restricts any warmth passing through the wall, reducing the money you spend on heating. You can check your wall type by looking at your brick pattern. If the bricks have an even pattern and are laid lengthways, then the wall is likely to have a cavity. If some of the bricks are laid with the square end facing, the wall is likely to be solid. If the wall is stone, it is likely to be solid. If your home was built within the last 25 years it is likely to been already insulated or possibly partially insulated. The surveyor can check this with a borescope inspection. Bill savings and things to be aware of: Can save between £145-£480 a year on your fuel bills depending on property size (Figures from the Energy Saving Trust and assume property is a gas heated home and sized between a flat to a detached home). Walls are normally drilled and then filled from the outside, which minimises disruption and mess. Can be completed in a few hours. Grant funding is available that can cover the full cost of installation (qualifying criteria apply).
